Being lonely in SL, is that even possible,
I hear you ask. It most definitely is. I would even go as far as to say that at one
time or another we have all suffered from a bout of loneliness in SL, some of
us more than others. We all get lonely at times. It doesn't mean there is
anything wrong with us.
Most of us need someone to
validate our existence, but at what cost?
Sometimes we end up doing things that aren’t true to ourselves, and what
for, a bit of fleeting attention, only to be left hollower than we were before,
and with an actual physical pain. It's an ache in your chest, a heaviness that
you can't shake, a longing that only the connection to another person can
soothe.
But there is no need to
wallow. Instead
of persistently dwelling on how alone you feel, take yourself out for a date, and come to
Sweethearts Jazz Club. Challenge
yourself to take the initiative in social interactions. Don't wait for
people to approach you: you should approach them. Ask the person if they want
to chat or dance. You need to show interest in other people before they will
show interest in you. If we want
connection and we all want
connection, otherwise we wouldn’t have joined Second Life to begin with, it is
a social environment after all, we must let ourselves be seen.
Be
a pleasant presence. Draw
people toward yourself by providing enjoyable company, interact with the open
chat. Be complimentary rather than critical. IM someone randomly to start a
conversation and you stand an excellent chance of making a new friend. If
you have a fear of rejection, take a chance, nothing ventured nothing gained. We must love with our whole being and live with
the fact that there are no guarantees.
