Laws of Attraction

Most of us seek a partner, for life or at least for a while, but how do we choose? The Laws of Attraction apply to Second Life as much as they do in real life. And how often have you heard your pessimistic friends complain that it is so difficult to meet anyone in Second Life, only to complain when they do get a date that they could “do better”.  Does that mean that their expectations are unrealistic?  Do they have onerous checklists that potential dates need to live up to? How often do you find that what you want and what you get don’t always share the same boat?  The bottom line is to balance our dreams, desires and wants with what is also realistic, and being ‘realistic’ means to have found the means to be content with both the good and the bad.

There are any number of wonderful people residing in Second Life and as I have already pointed out there are similarities with relationships in SL and RL, SL has its very specific limitations. After all, we meet hundreds of people during our journey in Second Life. What makes two people pick one another from among the myriad available candidates?

Two main theories have guided scientific thinking on the subject. First is evolutionary theory which claims that behavioural tendencies, physical characteristics, and personality features that promote our chances to survive and reproduce become, by that virtue, desirable to us.

On the other hand, 'social role theory,’ developed by the American psychologist Alice Eagly, argues that social—rather than biological—processes dictate our social choices. According to this argument, the mate selection rules are dictated by the roles that women and men occupy in society. Which when you translate that into Second Life, are completely self-manufactured, since the premise of SL is that you can be who you want to be. So back to square one.

 In my opinion you need to use your common sense when establishing a relationship of any significance in SL. There are a few basic things strong relationships NEED; be sure to commit yourself to someone who is giving you more than half-assed company and a wild slex sesh a couple of times a week. You need to be loved. You need to be respected. You need someone who’s gonna help you be the best version of yourself possible. Don’t settle for less.
